6th June Dubai Airport

We arrived here at 12:20am local time (GMT +3 I think) and will leave on the final leg of our journey at 08:50. At present it is 2:20 am here so we have been awake a little over 15 hours.

The taxi arrived 30 minutes early to take us to Cairo airport, before Geoff had had his shower and finished playing football manager, so he had to wait 20 minutes for us. It was the man who brings us back from Carrefour on a Friday (he recognised me as his Friday lady) so he knew where to pick us up from, I had tried to book him on Friday after our last trip to Carrefour but in the true spirit of confusion you get out here he couldn’t handle it and asked us to call him Tuesday morning and if he wasn’t busy he’d take us.

We arrived early at Cairo terminal 1 and had to wait 1 hour before they started taking the luggage, at which point there was a small hiccup in the proceedings as the computer couldn’t connect to immigration to see if we could travel all they way New Zealand! It was a tense 15 minutes while first one then  another of the attendants tried to get out boarding passes. Our luggage almost went without us, then they put it in another airlines kiosk, then they got it back and put it where we could see it. Finally all the problems were resolved and we moved through to passport control, of course it was my paper work they wanted to check but everything was in order.

We wasted time wandering and having a drink and cake at a coffee shop only to find out it would have been cheaper to have a McDonalds. My bottle of water had the look of a shampoo bottle more than anything.

The Emirate airways flight took a little over 3 hours, the food was good and the choice of films excellent. Maddison found the Disney films and watched UP and Beauty and the Beast (which she claims not to have seen for donkeys years)

Here in Dubai we have visited McDonalds for drinks already and may return later to keep ourselves awake. Geoff is currently wandering around the duty free shops while Maddy and I wait for stage 2 of our journey around the world….
