First port of call this morning was Muchelney Abbey, an interesting drive for Geoff along some narrow picturesque country lanes. The church next door had the most amazing ceiling I had ever seen!
From here we travelled to our main objective of the trip The Royal Fleet Arm Air Museum. This is an amazing place full of aircraft (obviously) and a simulation of the carrier HMS Ark Royal. After a mock helicopter flight A mock flight deck, the Island and an aircraft taking off formed a series of well constructed and interactive displays. The most important aircraft her was an F4 phantom. (For fans of JAG this is the plane Harm’s dad was shot down in.)
From here Geoff drove to Old Wardour Castle down another set of interesting and narrow country lanes – much better signposts this time , which was just as well as this castle really was at the back of beyond.
Driving towards Salisbury we solved the puzzle of out AA map that just said ‘Regimental Badges’. There were actually regimental badges carved into the chalk at Fovant.
Through Salisbury to Old Sarum and then onto Stonehenge before returning to Hatfield for one of Ivy’s delicious fish curries.
