21st July Kenilworth Castle

We joined English Heritage when we went to York, 15 months for 12 (bargain!), part of what they do is put on events to encourage you to visit their properties. My favourite is the jousting. This year it was in Cornwall or at Kenilworth – near Coventry, as Cornwall was not part of our schedule this year we headed for Coventry armed with a picnic courtesy of Asda. The first problem was the A414 being shut, so after standing 20 mins in traffic we were able to turn round and take another route via the M25, M1 and A46. It took over 2 hours but eventually we were there.

Tents had been erected, fires were burning, there were people enacting village life from the middle ages, including skinning rabbits. Falconry,  armour was there to try on, there were bows to see, a fool on stilts juggling fire, an Elizabethan garden and the ruins of the castle.

A brilliant day out (285 pictures) that was topped by an incredible Indian meal (take away from a restaurant Ivy recommended) in Hatfield afterwards. While we were eating we could hear (and see) the Blades aerobatic team flying over Hatfield house, then the cannons fired and at 8pm when the battle prom started the music a spitfire flew overhead performing aerial stunts for about 10 minutes WOW. At 10:30pm when the prom ended there was a fireworks display that we could just see over the tops of trees.
