Sunday 8th July

We awoke to the sound of church bells pealing in the distance which was much nicer than the call to prayer we hear in Egypt. Maddison and I both had opticians appointments today at 12:30pm, apparently Spec savers have been open on Sundays for the last 2 years! I am now the proud owner of a new pair and a get one free pair (sunglasses) of varifocals that I can collect on the 18th and Maddison has a free pair of glasses for distance. She is quite excited at being able to sit at the back of the room and see the board without screwing her eyes up. First, however we popped across to Asda with Geoff and Ivy to get supplies for the roast pork dinner we are having tonight! I also needed some Strepsils and lemsips as my throat is sore and I have a touch of cold (no doubt I could blame it on the cold and rain). At 2pm we wandered to the end of the street to see the Olympic torch go past, by 3pm Maddison was ready to call it  day as we were still waiting but just then it turned up. (it rained a little).

There were men selling flags, badges and blow up Olympic torches and they didn’t turn up in a mob, they didn’t ask you to buy and left you alone – so different from the sellers at the pyramids. A couple of people on stilts and over in the market place a family fun day was in full swing with stalls, rids for the kids and food.

First came the sponsor buses, Samsung, Coke and Lloyds. Geoff collected 2 Samsung union flags (it is only called the Union Jack when it is flown at sea) and a free bottle of coke zero, which he passed on to Maddison. Then came the torch carried by a man called David. It was all over very quickly after all that waiting.
