23rd July–to Southampton

Today we took Maddy to Southampton to stay with her St. Helenian friends Jodie and Emily Walters. The M25 had it’s low points as we drove round but eventually we reached Wolvesey Castle, an English Heritage property in Winchester, home of Bishop Henry 1129-1171. Not as well sign posted as it might have been, we eventually found it behind a stream and converted mill with part of the grounds forming the playing fields of an adjacent primary school.

Then onto Netley Abbey ruins where we had arranged to meet Maddy’s friends. The signposts here were designed to be fun and the entrance was in the middle of road-works and not easily spotted on the first pass.

A small problem here, Emily was dropped off at the wrong place where her credit ran out, and then Maddy ran out of credit so I had to phone round to sort everything out and collect children. WE stopped off for a chat with Cherrie (Jodie’s mum) and then carried on to Fiddleford Manor on the other side of the New Forest.

From here we went to see Sherborne old castle, another exciting road trip.

Finally it was off the the travelodge at Ilminster for dinner at the Little Chef (2 courses for £10 and 20% discount) and a good nights sleep before the return journey.

No rain !
