After a late breakfast and putting some washing in and out of the machine we set off for Lake Tekapo armed with cheese sandwiches and some fruit from our hostess. It was a 90 minute drive with photo opportunities along the road.
When we arrived the lake was a turquoise blue (due to the glacial silt and the reflection of the sunlight) and we visited the points of interest around the edge.

Then along the bank to the ice skating rink and the hot pools. Our choice was the hot pools! Geoff didn’t want to skate as he is the one doing all the driving (the picture on my licence has expired) and there would have been a problem it he’d damaged himself. So we went to the pools, they are heated from the heat generated from keeping the ice cold in the skating rink next door. Maddy and I hired costumes but Geoff had brought his with him – always prepared!
The water was great, to the back of us there were pine trees, the front edge of which were dead, we assumed from the the chlorine in the hot air rising from the pool, in the other direction a mountain covered in snow . After an hour soaking in there we went to look to the horse riding along the alpine trial, sadly it was closed for winter so Maddy didn’t get to ride in the snow. The road we were on continued up to Mount John’s Observatory so we drove there on roads reminiscent of St. Helena. At the top there was an amazing, snow for a Maddison to dance in, and a cafe serving hot chocolate. They were offering white hot chocolate so Maddy and I tried that but it was more of a hot milk than anything so we’ll stick to the real thing next time.
Geoff thinks these hills look like chocolate cake with a dusting of icing sugar!
From the observatory we drove back to Timaru to rest and get ready for the ‘Pam came to visit this Winter’ celebrations tomorrow.
