Yipee! We planned and booked a short break when we got back to the UK. After looking at the alternatives we went with Eurostar as Hatfield station is within walking distance of Ivy’s house, Kings Cross Station is next to St Pancras and we could book through tickets.
Leaving the house at 8:15am we forgot the sandwiches for our picnic on the train but were at the station with lots of time to spare. Then onto London and the Olympic rings hanging at St. Pancras station. Luggage was scanned, tickets checked and we found our seats. The journey was 2 and a half hours and passed very quickly, passing under the channel without any incident, despite Geoff discussing how blowing the train up would cause a lot of disruption!
The hotel was 200m from Gare du Nord in the direction of the Sacre Coeur Basilica so after checking in and depositing our luggage we were off exploring. Obviously the closest sight was the Sacre Coeur so we headed there to walk the steps up to the church and then a further 330 steps to the top of the dome for an expansive view of the roof tops of Paris. We wandered the backstreets to get back to the hotel passing a Carrefour as we did to pick up dinner and food for the next day.
